Life Skills
Homesteading
The “homestead” life skills component of our vision is what makes our Christian school unique. The extracurricular, hands-on learning is centered around life skills such as:
- raising chickens or bottle calves
- construction
- mechanics
- a greenhouse for garden starts
- a pumpkin patch
- baking
- sewing
- and other practical life skills
This is done by dividing students into small groups and having weekly assigned chores. Students rotate through the chores, learning each and gaining confidence as the year progresses.
Our afternoon sessions are centered around various life skills. We utilize community friends for these skill-based afternoon sessions.
The product of this learning could be sold to friends and family to go back into supporting the school. We hope to purchase a storefront in Taneyville to sell what the students make and grow. There would also be an opportunity for our students, with supervision, to help in the store.
Music
Another goal is for students to learn to sing and play an instrument for the purpose of worship and church leadership. We believe that with training and exposure a child has within them this potential.
Our music teacher will offer weekly private or small group classes on piano, guitar, and possibly other instruments of interest. We also hope to have a couple of practice rooms with space for students to spend time each day on their instruments.
Singing will be incorporated into class devotions, chapel services, school programs, and other subjects for memory work.
